Corbyn had just passed the small niche in the wall when a burst of flame cascaded over her crew. The women rolled on the ground, and Corbyn understood what the message was about. She snuck up behind the bot and used the nanites on its exposed wiring. It paused, and she looked around.

“Ladies, I will be right back. Stay here, and this last one is ours.”

She spoke to the bot, “Reverse and accelerate down the hallway.”

It moved, and she rode along on its back until she saw the spot she wanted. “Stop!”

It stopped.

She added to her order. “Remain here.”

It remained in place while she ran to trigger the final station on her list. It took her less than two minutes, and when she returned, the bot was waiting.

She got on it again. “Return to your station and deactivate until summoned again.”

It whirred along, and when it approached the crowd of her guards, Corbyn dropped to the ground and rolled to a halt while the flamethrower backed into its niche.

“Okay, ladies, we are done.”

The group was exhausted, and Corbyn didn’t blame them. They were sporting burns, wearing food and had crept two kilometres and now had to reverse the path. It was time to get back to Myx.

Corbyn walked along for a few minutes when she felt a strangely familiar warmth. She pressed her hand to the wall and felt the vibration. The bees. Their hive must have expanded underground for the wall to be that hot.

“Pilot, what are you doing?”

“Wondering how deep that hive of crimson bees goes. They are up against the inner wall.”

The woman shivered. “Don’t let them know we are in here. I get the feeling they would come through.”

Corbyn chuckled. “Then, we had best be quiet and get Myx to prepare for defense. This time of day they should be less violent, but who knows what these bees are like? I am only familiar with the local variety near the valley.”

They went silent and resumed their walk back through the corridors without any more incidents.

The bees must have all been in their hive because there were no threat displays or attacks while Corbyn and her troops got back in Myx.

Corbyn settled into the pilot’s cradle, and she jumped when Myx removed some of the nanites from her hand. “What is that for?”

“I need the nanites to help the machine wake completely.”

Corbyn nodded and removed her headset with her other hand. “Excellent. Any news from the others?”

“Ai is done, Len’s crew is just returning to him now.”

“Well, with two done, and one on the way, half of this mission is done.”

“It counts for nothing unless all are done, but I can report that all stations are active. The machine has its conduits activated, and the rising should occur within the hour.”

“Do you want to stand?” Corbyn could see the hive, and it wasn’t as quiet as she would like.

“Certainly. You can walk me back toward the southern end of the wall if you like.”

Corbyn grinned.
